Building the Foundation for Learning in Lower School

The first weeks of Lower School are about much more than learning where to put a backpack or how to move through a new building. Students are intentionally learning how to be part of a community of learners—building relationships, establishing routines, setting hopes and dreams, and developing shared agreements that will shape their classrooms and, eventually, the entire Lower School community.

That work grows alongside our students. Kindergarteners begin by getting to know the places and faces that make up their new school. Grade 1 explores community through friendship, Grade 2 through teamwork, Grade 3 through leadership, and Grade 4 through personal responsibility. Through each lens, students consider what they hope to accomplish this year and what they need from themselves and one another to get there.

This intentional start is grounded in the Responsive Classroom approach, which recognizes that a safe, joyful, and rigorous learning environment is built deliberately. By giving students a voice in creating their community now, teachers are laying the foundation for the independence, collaboration, and deep academic engagement that will follow throughout the year.
