The Thaden community is deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved friend and colleague, Bob Kohler, who passed away on November 28 in Fayetteville. Diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2005, Bob fought the disease relentlessly, with grace and fortitude, supported by dedicated family and friends and brilliant researchers, doctors and nurses in Arkansas and across the country.
An architect and member of Thaden School’s founding project team, Bob made many unique and enduring contributions to the design and construction of our campus. Among the flourishes that he brought to our temporary buildings are the shade sails that give cover and lift to the elevated courtyard on our East Campus. We have named this area “Kohler Deck” in his honor.
We remember Bob for his unfailing passion for the built environment, his love of the arts, his dedication to students, and his endearing sense of wonder. Bob’s courage in the face of his 12-year battle with cancer will always be a source of inspiration.
Bob is survived by his wife Laura Goodwin and son Owen Goodwin Kohler of Fayetteville; by his mother Diane (Burgher) Enholm of Dallas; and sisters Robin Stieber of Colorado Springs and Joan McGraw of Dallas. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Charles Kohler, Jr., of Carmel, California.
A memorial service is planned in Starr Theater at Walton Arts Center on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 2:00 pm. Gifts in Bob’s memory can be made to TheatreSquared Our Next Stage campaign at theatresquared.org.
