The childhood home of Louise McPhetridge Thaden (1905-1979), a Bentonville native and one of the greatest aviators of her time, will soon be moved to the campus of the school named in her honor. Built in the mid-1890s, the house will undergo extensive on-site renovations and will include spaces for public gatherings and classes as well as an archive and gallery for historic documents and memorabilia. The school will also renovate the original summer kitchen, a free-standing structure that will sit next to the house.
Last winter the Thaden house was moved in large sections from its original location on West Central Avenue and stored for safe keeping while the school developed a plan for integrating it into the campus design. During this first phase of the renovation, large sections of the house will be reassembled and situated on new footings near the corner of Eighth and SE C Streets. The school’s design and construction team will then assess the structural needs of the house on site and refine the restoration plan accordingly. The project is expected to take several months to complete.
“We are delighted to give these historic structures a new home on our campus, which also served as the site of Bentonville High School in the 1920s when Louise Thaden was a student there,” said Clayton Marsh, Founding Head of School. “Thaden House will anchor our school in its history and support our vision of the campus as place for community engagement.”
Last year, with support from the Walton Family Foundation’s Design Excellence Program, the school commissioned a nationally renowned team of architects to design its 30-acre campus in downtown Bentonville. The campus will consist of several buildings, structures, and landscape features that create a diverse and innovative learning environment. Construction of the main campus is now underway, and the first two buildings are scheduled for completion in early 2019. The school opened this fall in temporary classrooms and offices that will be decommissioned as permanent buildings become available.
